The Shadow Wall:movement for people with multiple and profound learning disabilities
Published by Susan Heath July 3rd, 2007 in Music Gym membershipThe Short White Pulse film demonstrates the possibilities of using video effects to create images. The software is fascinating but we needed to be able to use it in our work with people with profound disabilities.
We’ve done this by setting up the shadow wall as part of the Music Gym - a magical feature that immediately makes you feel you’re taking part in your own dance video.

The images are magnified which helps the members who are visually impaired as does the stark contrast of black and white. By adding props such as a dance ribbon or pompoms there’s a chance to create interesting shapes to add to the movement.
To date the wall has been used more by support staff, making shapes for members who have no movement themselves, creating images to which they can relate.
We trust that in time the members themselves will be taking part. One thing we’ve learned from the Music Gym is to allow time - for a new piece of equipment to be used, or for someone to join in. A person may pace up and down, observing, for any number of sessions then suddenly walk to the Soundbeam or castle and be involved.
