The Music Gym - a personal view of this service for people with complex needs
Published by Susan Heath July 3rd, 2007 in Music Gym membership, music therapyI had a rare opportunity last week to try out the Music gym, as I’m usually in the cafe area, explaining it to someone instead. I’d forgotten just how much fun it is.
Bouncing on the castle, listening for what track would come on next. Running to the front to stop it, then running back to trigger the next one. Dancing on the drumming boards - that was particularly good with someone else, finding out how to blend the sounds. As we did this a carer was dancing, throwing huge white shadows onto the wall.
Just relaxing then, sitting on the vibro-accoustic tiles and watching everyone in the hall. Some staff and family who come are so inspiring, in the way they know and understand the people they bring and in the effort they take to help them progress.
Each week there’s at least one moment when someone does something new for them. It can be extraordinary - the young woman walking on her frame without staff help - or something more simple - the young man dancing and smiling with a new volunteer when he usually takes a long time to get to know someone.
The moment’s fleeting but enough to make our staff turn out at 7.15 the next week to set the whole thing up again……..
