decodamusicgym-56-of-82.jpgIt’s time to say thank you again to our volunteers, like Alexa (on the left in the photo) who add so much to the experience of Music Gym members.

Because the Music Gym is aimed at people with profound disabilities the members need their support staff in the hall at all times. It can be a great opportunity for them to have fun together and for the staff member to see someone do something they hadn’t thought possible.

There are times however that members appreciate input from a new person especially someone willing to communicate with them in their individual way. The Music Gym is all about developing communication and our volunteers spend most of their time creating relationships with the Gym members in a fun way.
All we ask of volunteers is that they want to have fun and have the patience to follow the lead of the member in how they express themselves. Within the course of a Friday morning Alexa’s likely to be seen on the bouncy castle, on the drumming boards dancing with her shadow, playing basketball or with the parachute, racing on spacehoppers or simply sitting chatting. She says she loves working in an unstructured way, arriving not knowing what will happen but that it will all be enjoyable. Our volunteers are encouraged to understand the workings of the Music Gym and to be able to advise the staff on its use.

They come from various backgrounds and all have their own reasons for wanting to volunteer. Sometimes a setback in their life has left them wanting to give to others. Sadly, for us, that can mean they move on when their circumstances change but that’s what you expect when you take on volunteers.

If you can be in Hastings on a Friday and you think you’d like to volunteer at the Music Gym, please contact us by phoning 01424 444322 or by filling in our contact form.
