ballsWe’re learning at the Music Gym all the time. One thing we’ve learned is how much people love the simple things - inflatables to hit one another with, balls to throw to each other - and our members are no exception.

Although the Music Gym is designed to engage people with profound disabilities through the use of music, sound technology and images, the important element is the engaging and if that comes about through throwing and catching a ball then all well and good.

The picture shows the new huge ball that arrived last Friday, thanks to recent donations from Benenden based band Sticky Tyres and from Barton Court Grammar School in Canterbury. The need for a second ball arose as the members who are in wheelchairs love being able to play football with something this large - either by the ball being rolled towards the chair or the chair being rolled towards the ball.

The balls appear to be breeding and producing offspring in the form of spacehoppers. These proved a big hit with the members’ support staff and we aim to engage them as well - the Gym works best when the members and their staff have fun together. This was the main finding of the independent evaluation in our first year - that the crucial element in anyone benefiting from the Music Gym is the input and interest of their carer or family member.
